Ignite Fort Collins #7 – Change: Making it Happen
This is the YouTube video of my presentation on Change at Ignite Fort Collins on Feb 10, 2011.

I have a slew of new presentations coming up in the first half of 2011: (materials to be posted after each presentation)
Change – Fort Collins Ignite #7 – February 10, 2011 – 5 minutes, 20 slides, each slide advances every 15 seconds -Welcome to Ignite! Ignite Sessions are happening in cities around the world. My presentation at the seventh Ignite session to be held in Fort Collins is about personal change – making it happen and making it stick.
I am doing several sessions at the Equal Justice Conference, a national conference sponsored by the American Bar Association and the National Legal Aid and Defenders Association, May 18-21, 2011.
Building Community Engagement through Social Media – using social media to do more than just fundraise, but to build awareness of your mission, recruit volunteers, and learn more about what your community cares about.
What Counts? From Data to Decisions: – case management systems are just one place to collect data about your clients and the work you do. Other sources of data can be easily tapped (brief surveys, court partnerships for data gathering and using Sharepoint to create new systems of data retention) and can be combined to create much needed information for making management decisions.
50 Tips in 50 minutes – I will be one of many folks giving you quick, useful tips – one a minute – during this fast paced and fun session.
As promised here are the materials from both my sessions. TIG was -again- a fabulous conference and I had so much fun re-connecting with everyone and catching up. I am planning on attending EJC come May, 2011 in Las Vegas so I will let everyone know now that I will be renting a road bike, planning a Nerd Girl Dinner, and hosting a Tech Happy Hour!
What does all that mean?
Renting a Road Bike – Jed Untereker of ILAO and I rode every morning in Albuquerque to get our exercise in and see a bit of downtown Albuquerque. Wednesday and Thursday we rode at 6am (yes it was VERY cold!) and on Friday we got lucky and did a 7:30am ride on a portion of the Paseo del Bosque Bike Trail. Rides in Vegas could get very interesting! (Can you imagine the Strip before dawn?!?!) Just remember everyone is welcome (regardless of ability – this is a No Drop Ride!) and we ride early early morning. When I (or someone) figures out where to rent from I will post that information here.
Nerd Girl Dinner – a chance for techie women to hang out together, trade stories, and get to know each other. Women only but that is the only criteria. I haven’t picked a night yet but it will not conflict with the opening reception – let me know if you want to attend and if you have any special ideas about where to eat.
Tech Happy Hour – those of you who attended last year’s EJC hopefully also got a chance to join me at my happy hour! Steve Scudder was kind enough to lend me his suite for a couple of hours and I had appetizers and beer/wine for any tech folks who wanted and excuse to start to party a little earlier. The Happy Hour will probably be between 5pm and 7pm the night of the reception and again hosted by me and in Steve’s suite. Tell Steve how wonderful he is for sharing! I will post more when I know more.

JRaby TIG Ignite Change – a topic near and dear to my heart – making lasting positive change in your life.
I did a short, spot on social media presentation today targeted to small entrepreneurs just getting started with social media. The discussion was lively as everyone seems to have an opinion and some questions on what social media can – and can’t – do.
Health and Wellness:Building Your Business with Social Media
On Wednesday, December 15, 2010 I will be presenting How Small Businesses Can Use Social Media at Reader’s Cove for the Health and Wellness Business Building Meetup. Check this space after the presentation for a free copy of my materials!
This past November, Kate Bladow of Technola.org and I did a webinar for the Legal Services National Technology Assistance Project on entitled Using Social Media to Engage Your Supporters. This webinar was recorded and is free to anyone who wants to listen. LSNTAP also has copies of our powerpoint and our notes, available for free download on this page.
The session goes over the rules of online listening, how to pick the social media tools you want to use and then how to use those tools effectively. Kate and I gave some great, real-life examples of how nonprofits can use these powerful online tools to engage supporters and further their missions.
I love coming to Austin! And the folks at the Texas State Bar are only too awesome to work for – (Thank You! Hannah and Hannah) I presented on a panel on Social Media: Email and Beyond which prompted a lively discussion on all things Internet related. I will be posting the powerpoint and my notes here soon.
The presentation was a panel discussion that covered traditional media and “new” (online based) media. The audience was very engaged and the discussion was lively and face paced.
Just before our session started – the group took a break and snacked on cupcakes! The Cupcake Bar allowed you to pick between vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, the kind of frosting you wanted, whether or not you wanted filling, and finally what kind of topping you wanted. Yum Yum Yum!
During dinner (at El Mercado at La Vaca and 15th street) we were serenaded by a mariachi band – they were good but loud!
Good tex-mex, ‘ritas and mariachi – Life is Good.
I presented to the CBC – the Conscious Business Connections group – here in Fort Collins. The topic was Social Media – below is my powerpoint presentation. Feel free to download and use the material yourself. The basics of the presentation are:
1) Be Specific and Unique – if you are just getting started, pick one thing about your business that you want your customers to know – your latest product or service or maybe an upcoming event. Start small and specific and see how it goes.
2) When you are ready to try something – Just Pick. Its okay to start with Facebook or Twitter or doing a video on Youtube – just pick whatever you seem most comfortable with and don’t worry just yet if you have the “right” tool. It is better to try something and have it be only mildly successful rather than to do nothing at all.
3) Add Value – if you want people to interact with you -in any context really – you have to give them something they want, something they value. Discounts, insider information, a community to join – whatever works best.
4) Create and Sustain – once it is created you can’t walk away – you do have to work a little bit every day on this – that may be alot in the beginning but remember you are going to get better and eventually you won’t need to spend more than a few minutes a day keeping up.
5) Don’t make me think – I totally stole this from Steve Krug’s book - but it is a fabulous rule to follow – don’t make it hard for me to find you, don’t make it hard for me to interact with you, and don’t make me work too hard to get your product or service. Type this one up and post it above your computer.

I had such fun at the United Way TAP Symposium! It was a great crowd and a terrific presentation. Click here for my powerpoint: UW TAP May 2010 DIY Audit Presentation, and Click here for the worksheets DIY Tech Audit for NPOs.
And this is what one attendee had to say:
Dear Joyce -
I attended the TAP Symposium today and I had to take a moment to tell you how very much I enjoyed your presentation. You were, by far, the most dynamic and interesting and timely speaker of the day!
The tools you provided are so helpful and I hope to use them to improve our systems immediately; even though we’re doing pretty well, we can do better.
Thanks again for making this symposium well worth the price of admission.
Best wishes,
Jane”
