Aug 18, 2010:Conscious Business Connections, Fort Collins, CO

August 13, 2010

I presented to the CBC – the Conscious Business Connections group – here in Fort Collins.  The topic was Social Media – below is my powerpoint presentation.  Feel free to download and use the material yourself.  The basics of the presentation are:

1) Be Specific and Unique – if you are just getting started, pick one thing about your business that you want your customers to know – your latest product or service or maybe an upcoming event.  Start small and specific and see how it goes.

2) When you are ready to try something – Just Pick.  Its okay to start with Facebook or Twitter or doing a video on Youtube – just pick whatever you seem most comfortable with and don’t worry just yet if you have the “right” tool.  It is better to try something and have it be only mildly successful rather than to do nothing at all.

3) Add Value – if you want people to interact with you -in any context really – you have to give them something they want, something they value.  Discounts, insider information, a community to join – whatever works best.

4) Create and Sustain – once it is created you can’t walk away – you do have to work a little bit every day on this – that may be alot in the beginning but remember you are going to get better and eventually you won’t need to spend more than a few minutes a day keeping up.

5) Don’t make me think – I totally stole this from Steve Krug’s book - but it is a fabulous rule to follow – don’t make it hard for me to find you, don’t make it hard for me to interact with you, and don’t make me work too hard to get your product or service.  Type this one up and post it above your computer.
