Social Media Links – Policy and Otherwise

September 29, 2010

Last week I did a presentation on Social Media for the Pro Bono Coordinator’s Retreat hosted by the State Bar of Texas.  The last day of the conference I assisted Bar staff in facilitating a discussion of “next steps” for participants so they would have a few things for to do around social media they could knock out their first day back on the job.  As part of that discussion I was asked about creating social media policies – I collected the information below for them and pass it along to you now as I think it can help you get a start on figuring out what a social media policy is and how to create one.

And for anyone interested – This is the presentation – TX PBC Retreat Social Media v3 - given by myself, Kimberly Schmitt of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, Cynthia Martinez of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, and Ellyn Josef of Vinson &Elkins.

Examples of policies –
http://123socialmedia.com/2009/01/23/social-media-policy-examples/ - a more business oriented site but with lots of links to different kinds of policies (from very simple to very complex)

http://laurelpapworth.com/enterprise-list-of-40-social-media-staff-guidelines/ - not a policy example list per se but a nice guide for how to work with and manage social media staff (or anyone that is working on social media in your organization) TONS of good information on this page and lots and lots of links to other good work.

Creating Policy
http://socialmedia.policytool.net/ - an online tool for creating a policy -a bit “quick and dirty” but it will give you a good start.  Don’t be tempted to use this tool and then be “done”.  You still need to have an honest forthright conversation with company management and staff on the what, where, and how of social media use in your organization.  However, it is nice to have a guide help you put together a template.

A few websites on social media that I think you all might find helpful -
www.bethkanter.org – THE guru on social media in nonprofits.  A good person to follow.

http://www.idealware.org/topics/social-media - I like the reports and articles that Idealware puts out – they are free and the information is timely and comprehensive.
