Participatory News Consumer

March 2, 2010

This may not sound like your clients but I think this research by Pew confirms what the Capgemini Research had to say about looking at digital natives as a way to predict future trends in Internet usage.  Pew says that consumers are now getting news from a variety of sources - both online and offline - and that online sources are growing.  And consider these statistics on how individuals consume the news:

  • Portable: 33% of cell phone owners now access news on their cell phones.
  • Personalized: 28% of internet users have customized their home page to include news from sources and on topics that particularly interest them.
  • Participatory: 37% of internet users have contributed to the creation of news, commented about it, or disseminated it via postings on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter.
  • Sounds a lot like the data from Capgemini that said Control (they want information to be portable meaning available on any media: and personalized; customized to their own tastes and interests) and Community Interactions (participatory: users contributing to the news or to the distribution of news) were two of the top four desires exhibited by digital natives in their study.

Just pointing out a nice consistency in the research.
